Videos - multi-aspect ratio support

Multi-aspect ratio support lets the same Video be available in multiple formats, so Viewers can watch comfortably in both vertical and horizontal orientations.

When multiple aspect ratios are available for a Video (for example, 9:16, 16:9, 1:1, or 4:5), the player adapts playback to maximize screen usage and reduce friction when Viewers change orientation.

How it behaves

  • Automatic best-fit selection: the player picks the best available aspect ratio for the Viewer's current device orientation.
  • Rotation-based switching: when both vertical and horizontal renditions exist, rotating the device switches playback to the matching ratio with minimal loading.
  • Manual switching (Flip button): a Flip button may appear in the bottom-right corner so Viewers can switch aspect ratios without rotating the device.
  • Largest possible display: when multiple aspect ratios are available, the player prioritizes the rendition that fills the most of the current orientation.
  • More than two ratios: some ratios may never show if they don't maximize screen usage for the given orientation.
  • Automated new ratios: aspect ratios from automated creation flows are supported automatically.

Rules and requirements

  • Renditions must exist: multi-aspect ratio playback works only when the Video has been generated in more than one aspect ratio.
  • Recommended setup: for the smoothest experience, provide both a vertical and a horizontal rendition (commonly 9:16 and 16:9).
  • Automated generation only: multi-aspect ratio behavior is supported only for aspect ratios created through automated creation flows (Create and Rules).
  • Source content matters: to generate multiple aspect ratios reliably, source content should be available in the required formats (commonly both vertical and horizontal).

Traits and limitations

  • Inline playback: inline playback doesn't support dynamic aspect ratio switching. Content may be cropped instead of switching ratios.
  • Uploaded graphics: uploaded graphic templates aren't supported for multi-aspect ratio generation. Use a dynamic template designed for multiple aspect ratios when you need this behavior.
  • Not all ratios appear: if a Video includes several ratios, the player may never display ratios that don't maximize screen usage in the current orientation.
